Cottonwood Lake number 2

The normal season in California's High Sierra ends in September. One year I kept visiting and breaking trail through the snow on the east slope whenever there was a sunny day. Yeah. It was cold at night. The lakes frequently iced over. But the days were incredibly clear and bright.

I packed and read John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierra, The Mountains of California and Clarence King's Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada. There is nothing like reading one of those books while leaning against a tree that may have been there when they passed through.

I went back here years later with my SO.
